Even today it is difficult to explain to people what I see. It isn’t black, it isn’t grey, simply nothing. I often ask people what they can see with their hand – this is exactly what I can see through my eyes – nothing.

On the next day we went to the doctor and it turned out that I got retinal detachment and that I became blind. A lot of medical tests followed, even eye operations, so I had a good chance to confuse a lot of doctors by telling them what I could see. In fact, I was seeing a lot of colours, lights, and shapes but just in my mind. For a 6 years old child, it was difficult to realise that I couldn’t see them with my eyes but only in my mind. Doctors were asking me why am I lying and I couldn’t understand why they don’t believe me.

Later, I understood that many people in the dark start seeing, in fact imagining, a lot of colours and lights, more than they can see in the light. It is some kind of brain compensation – the retina remembers and keeps sending information to the brain through the eye nerve.

I started imagining everything in colours, often asking sighted people to describe how things look like, so that I could confirm or correct what I could see in my mind. When I grew up I started hearing a lot of concepts, words from new languages, strange names and the only way I could memorise them was to start imagining them in colours or rather in mixture of colours.

Even today, 32 years later, I am still using a lot of colours in my mind to memorise things, exactly like I am using mental mapping in order to understand and memorise a place or space. It is difficult to explain the mixture of colours that I can see because most of the colours are not existing and I am not able to analyse the percentage of blue, yellow, red, white and black.

I have a strong opinion about colours when I dress or buy something for my flat. I am often impatient with people’s descriptions because… I concluded that people see colours often very subjectively, depending on their mood, culture, background or even… abilities to recognise colours.

Stevie Wonder was born in Saginaw, Michigan, in 1950, the third of six children to Calvin Judkins and Lula Mae Hardaway. He was born six weeks premature, which, along with the oxygen-rich atmosphere in the hospital incubator, resulted in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a condition in which the growth of the eyes is aborted and causes the retinas to detach; so he became blind. Wonder began playing instruments at an early age, including piano, harmonica and drums. He formed a singing partnership with a friend; calling themselves Stevie and John, they played on street corners, and occasionally at parties and dances.

In 1961, when aged 11, Wonder sang his own composition, "Lonely Boy", to Ronnie White of the Miracles. White then took Wonder and his mother to an audition at Motown, where CEO Berry Gordy signed Wonder to Motown's Tamla label. Before signing, producer Clarence Paul gave him the name Little Stevie Wonder.

Brave New World

"A Brave New World" author Aldous Huxley was blinded by an illness when he was a child. He suffered through blindness for years, but eventually regained some sight.

Aldous Leonard Huxley (26 July 1894 – 22 November 1963) was an English writer, philosopher and a prominent member of the Huxley family. He was blinded by an illness was he was a child and suffered through blindness for years, but eventually regained some sight.

Huxley, best known for his novels including Brave New World, was a humanist, pacifist, and satirist. Huxley later became interested in spiritual subjects such as parapsychology and philosophical mysticism, in particular, Universalism. By the end of his life, Huxley was widely acknowledged as one of the pre-eminent intellectuals of his time. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in seven different years.

In 1911, Huxley suffered an illness (keratitis punctata) which "left him practically blind for two to three years". Aldous volunteered to join the army at the outbreak of World War I, but was rejected on health grounds: he was half-blind in one eye. Once his eyesight recovered sufficiently, he was able to study English literature at Balliol College, Oxford. In 1916 he edited Oxford Poetry and later graduated (BA) with first class honours. His brother Julian wrote: "I believe his blindness was a blessing in disguise. For one thing, it put paid to his idea of taking up medicine as a career... His uniqueness lay in his universalism. He was able to take all knowledge for his province."
